How to set up comment-to-DM on Instagram

From a fresh account to a live automation, step by step.

Before you start

You need an Instagram Business or Creator account. If yours is personal, switch it in Instagram under Settings → Account type. It is free, reversible, and keeps your posts and followers.

You also need a post to attach the automation to, and something worth sending — a link, a code, a guide.

Step 1 — connect your account

Sign up and choose to connect Instagram. You will be redirected to Instagram’s own authorisation screen, where you grant permission for messaging and comment access.

You are never asked for your Instagram password inside AutoMes. If any tool asks for it, stop.

Step 2 — pick the post and the trigger

Choose the post or Reel the automation should watch. Then decide what fires it: a specific keyword like "LINK" or "GUIDE", several keywords, or any comment at all.

Keep keywords short, obvious and easy to spell. "GUIDE" outperforms "SENDMETHEGUIDE" because people type it correctly on the first try.

Step 3 — write the DM

Open by referencing what they asked for, so the message does not read as unsolicited. "Here’s the guide you asked for" lands better than "Hi!".

Put the link early. People skim DMs and the second line gets read far more than the fifth.

Add two or three variants if your plan supports rotation. It costs one extra minute and stops the automation reading as copy-paste when a post takes off.

Step 4 — decide on the follow gate

If growth matters more than raw link delivery, enable the follow gate so non-followers are asked to follow before the link is sent.

Write the ask politely and explain what happens next. A gate that reads as a demand costs you the follow and the click.

Step 5 — test it yourself

Comment your own keyword from a second account and confirm the DM arrives. This catches the two most common mistakes: the wrong post selected, and a keyword that does not match what the caption tells people to type.

Then check the logs. A send appearing there confirms the whole path is working end to end.

Step 6 — tell people what to do

The automation only fires if people comment the keyword, which means the caption has to ask for it explicitly.

Say it plainly: "Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it to you." Say it in the caption, and say it out loud in the Reel if there is one.

FAQ

Quick answers

About five minutes for the first automation, and a minute or two for each one after that.

Yes. Keywords, messages and settings can be changed at any time, and changes apply to comments from that point on.

Check that the keyword matches exactly, that the correct post is selected, and that the automation is switched on. The logs will show whether a send was attempted and what failed.
